June · Northern safari circuit
Drier season
Generally a drier part of the year. Plan for dust, sun and cooler dawns, especially at elevation. Drier weather does not guarantee every track is suitable.
The northern circuit often has two rainy periods, separated by drier intervals. Sunshine, dust and passing rain can change the character of the same road. Give game drives, fuel stops and camp setup time in your plan.
Pack first
A warm layer, sun hat and light rain shell.
Plan around
Dust in dry periods; changing tracks and drainage after rain.
The highlands are cooler than the low plains. Mist, wind and damp mornings can matter as much as rain. A rooftop tent night at elevation needs different clothing from a warm afternoon in Tarangire.
Pack first
Fleece or jacket, closed shoes and suitable sleepwear.
Plan around
Cold dawns, fog and visibility on winding highland roads.
Much of southern and western Tanzania has one wet season, generally from November to April or May. Longer distances and remote overnight stops make current access checks and sensible fuel planning especially useful.
Pack first
Breathable layers, rain protection and a protected day bag.
Plan around
Track conditions, campsite operation and realistic driving time.
Dar es Salaam and the northern coast are warm and humid, with seasonal rain and breezes. For a Zanzibar extension, consider sea conditions and transfers separately from your mainland vehicle rental. The southern coast follows a different rainfall rhythm.
Pack first
Light, modest clothing, sun protection and a rain layer.
Plan around
Humidity, local forecasts and confirmed island transfers.
Forecast points represent the named location, not a whole park. Rainfall alone cannot confirm road access; check with our team before remote driving.

03 / Prepare for the journey
Prepare for these conditions.
A well-paced journey gives you time for a slower track, a weather change and a relaxed camp setup before dark.
After rain
Recheck your route, leave time for slower progress and ask for advice before committing to a remote track. Follow local and park instructions.
In drier months
Plan water and fuel stops, allow space from other vehicles on dusty roads and keep luggage and camera gear protected.
At camp
Arrive during daylight, check the overnight setup and keep warm layers accessible. Confirm the bedding and equipment in your chosen build.
When is the drier period for a Tanzania self-drive safari?
June to September is generally the drier period across Tanzania. Northern areas often also have a relatively drier interval in January and February. The right travel window depends on your route, camping preferences and current conditions.
Are the rainy seasons the same throughout Tanzania?
No. Much of northern Tanzania and the northern coast has long rains around March to May and short rains around October to December. Southern, central and western areas generally have one wet season from around November to April or May.
Can we plan a self-drive safari during the rains?
A rainy-season journey needs current route advice, realistic driving days and flexible overnight plans. Ask our Arusha team about your intended route and dates before confirming remote tracks or campsites. A calendar alone does not confirm access.
Should I bring warm clothing for rooftop tent camping?
Yes. Higher areas such as the Ngorongoro highlands can feel cold at night and dawn, even when the plains are warm. Bring a warm layer and confirm the sleeping setup supplied with your vehicle.
Is this page a live weather forecast?
